A Story of Heritage, Hope, and Handmade Beauty
What if the wildflower paper you held in your hands could tell a 200-year-old story before blossoming into flowers when planted in the ground?
Along the gentle bend of the River Gade in Hertfordshire, you can still hear the echo of clanking cogs and splashing waterwheels.
In this sleepy canal town, one red-bricked mill stands as both a relic and a pioneer. A place where yesterday’s paper still shapes tomorrow’s sustainable future.

The Mill, Its Makers, and Its Mission
Set on an island in the Grand Union Canal, Frogmore Paper Mill began life in the Domesday Book as a corn mill.
The mill made history in 1803 by installing the world’s first continuous papermaking machine.
Funded by the pioneering Fourdrinier brothers, this invention transformed paper production from a slow, handcrafted process into a fast, industrial operation.
The Apsley Paper Trail are the mill’s modern-day custodians. Their mission? To protect a fragile but powerful link between the industrial past and an eco-conscious future.
The Fire and the Fight to Survive
In January 2022, an arson attack nearly ended it all. Flames devoured the visitor centre and museum exhibits. A story centuries in the making could have turned to ashes.
With the world losing touch with handcrafts and the environment under threat, the potential loss wasn’t just about bricks and machines, it was about losing a powerful symbol of sustainable innovation and community memory.
Staff, volunteers, and the community rallied in response to the fire. Insurance, donations, and sheer will kept the wheels turning.
Amidst the restoration, they doubled down on producing our premium handmade seed paper, delicate sheets infused with wildflower seeds, recycled fibre, and a philosophy rooted in rebirth.

The Mill Reopens and the Paper Blooms
By 2024, the mill had reopened parts of the site, launched new educational spaces, and was again making paper by hand on its Fourdrinier machine.
A place that birthed mechanised papermaking now leads a quieter but equally profound revolution, one sheet at a time.
From plantable wedding invites to seed-filled business cards, our seed paper spreads messages and wildflowers all across the UK.
We also offer unprinted seed paper sheets in a range of sizes, ready for crafting and eco-friendly projects at home.
